He is among the favourites of the Latvian selection show every time he takes part. He has scored more or less well depending on the year, but he is back.
Here is Markus Riva !
How would you define yourself in one word?
How would you describe your state of mind when you're on stage?
Flying in heaven, swimming in the ocean.
How would you quickly tell your life story?
Up and down, like a roller coaster but having fun and taking most out of my life, doing the best that I can do and live as fully as I could do.
How does one make you angry?
Negative vibes, talking shit about others.
How does one make you happy?
I get happy when I see happy and kind people, when I talk to them, when I see them in action. Inspiring people.
How would you define your taste in music?
My taste in music is very varied. Various artists. That is my compilation - from Tchaikovsky to The Weeknd. I just love music so much that I can not stick with only one artist. There are so many good artists out there.
If there was just 1 artist you could listen to for the rest of your life, who would it be?
Probably Whitney Houston. I could never get enough of her music, voice and charisma.
How would you describe This time, your song for the contest?
This is my break-up song. No happy ending song. But with a good vibe and promising future. This song can be related to by so many people. We stick to the ones we love, but sometimes the other half loses respect, love and support so it gets very unhealthy. That is why you have to stand for yourself and finalise that. We won’t make it right this time -there is no future for us.
How did you make the decision of entering the Supernova this year?
I had the song that I love. And I think that it is very important as well as willingness to perform in front of many people and showcase my artistry. And I am not participating just because I don’t have nothing to do, I have lot of projects going on but Eurovision is a very big step forward and I want to experience this platform.
How is this year going to be different from your previous participations?
I mean, every year is different. Song, performance, concept, jury, contestants etcetera. And I think you have to try to succeed, if you don’t try then you will never know how it could be. I still have this dream about Eurovision and I am sure that I will make it happen one day!
How would you make us want to come to Latvia?
Latvia is small, nice country. It calms you down. After my trips to Europe or Kiev and Moscow, it is always nice to return to my street, neighbourhood and live in this calm and pleasant atmosphere. And of course, our nature, sea, food, history… Just call me - I love to show around my country! Especially this year - when we have a lot of good events because of our 100th Anniversary.
How do you picture Eurovision in 10 years?
It is already the most HQ music show in the world so it will be fun to see how technologies are going to develop and help Eurovision to get even more amazing. And it is nice to see how the music style is changing over the decades.
How are you going to win Eurovision 2018?
I will try. If you never try then you will never know. :)
Markus, thank you very much for this interview ! He will be singing This Time tomorrow night to try and be one of the two qualifiers for the final !
