The third Romanian semi-final will be held tomorrow evening, and among the 12 competing artists, there will be Ayona!
How would you define yourself in one word?
How would you describe your state of mind when you're on stage?
I feel that any pain whatsoever can be overcome and changed into pure happiness; more than anywhere else, when I'm on stage, I'm in my element and I need nothing else.
How would you quickly tell your life story?
Oh! Wow! It's quite hard to quickly tell my life story, confining it to only a few words, but I'll try. Let's see…
I've been studying music since I was 4 (violin, piano and, since high school, bel canto) at George Enescu Music High School and then at the National University of Music from Bucharest; music has always helped me move on and face all my family problems which, when I was a child, kept me away from my colleagues and friends. That is because, for instance, I couldn't afford to go out or go shopping with my friends; as for field trips, they were out of question. So I dipped myself into listening to more and more music: old, new, it didn't matter, but especially into studying as many artists and musical genres as possible. When I turned 14, I started earning money from singing. I basically earned my own living and from 17 I could already support myself with music. I have overcome some serious health problems (which I am still dealing with) out of my love for music and my desire to continuously evolve and be on stage. Since I am 19, I share my life and heart with my husband, whom I'm also fortunate to have as my musical producer and who, working in the same field as I do, understands all the states I go through due to my career: happiness, pain, disappointment, ecstasy etc.
How does one make you angry?
I get angry when somebody judges me without getting to know me first. I don't like 'tags' at all.
How does one make you happy?
I'm very happy when I see somebody making a nice gesture just when you are expecting less and even for a person to whom he has no obligation or personal interests.
How would you define your taste in music?
Hmm… My taste in music is extremely 'colorful'. From classical music and jazz (Rachmaninoff, Bellini, Gershwin etc.) to chill-out music, rock, dance, pop, folklore and even techno music.
If there was just 1 artist you could listen to for the rest of your life, who would it be?
My beloved Whitney Houston.
How would you describe The story goes on, your song for the contest?
In my opinion, it is exactly what this contest needs: a complex song and 'airy' at a time, self-flowing and yet surprising when you are expecting less; it's a positive and stately song, which, once you listen to, it gives you a feeling of joy and energy. On this occasion, I want to thank the composer Ovidiu Anton for this great song.
How did you make the decision of entering Selectia Nationala this year?
I participated last year too and I liked a lot the variety of feelings this contest offered me.
How would you make us want to come to Romania?
Apart from the fact that we have great and diverse landforms, we are intelligent people, extremely gifted in many areas, we know how to have fun and even make others have fun.
How do you picture Eurovision in 10 years?
I've learned not to think so much for the long term; most of the time, the outcome is completely different. Still, I'm sure it will keep its magic!
How are you going to win Eurovision 2018?
Through perseverance and passion!
Ayona, thank you very much for this interview! We hope the story will go on tomorrow evening!
