Today, we get a chance to know more about the calmest act of the Finnish national selection.

Let's get to know Norma John!
Et c'est ici en français !

Hey Norma John! Who are you?

Norma John is a Finnish indie/pop band with a melancholic twist. We're two musicians and old friends, Lasse and Leena, together Norma John. We've known each other since high school and that's when we started making music together. Music is our passion and a way to express ourselves, and it's a big part of us. We hope that you can hear that in our music!

What is the Norma John touch in your music? And what could you bring to the Eurovision Song Contest?

We have been making music for a long time as Norma John, and we guess the music has now taken a mood that is a little bit darker. Making music has been, and still is, an outlet for creativity, so it reflects what touches or intrigues us at a given time. Blackbird is a simple and beautiful song, that came from the heartache of losing someone.

The ESC is something that brings together people from different countries, cultures and backgrounds. People can cross borders and feel united. Music can do that. It would be an honour to be a part of that. We love UMK, because it gives a chance for artists and bands like us to take part. It's not only big record companies that can compete. We hope that this doesn't change.
We liked Softengine. Maybe because like us, they didn't write their song piece by piece thinking about what would succeed in ESC. Usually the feeling of the song suffers of that, and it becomes something synthetic.

What kind of music do you like?

There are so many artists and bands that we love! Sigur Ros, Tori Amos, Björk, Jeff Buckley, Brandi Carlile and many many more. To name a favourite one is impossible!
The Finnish music industry is a business and it needs to make money. That is understandable. Because there are only about 5,5 million people living here, the industry is very narrow, and it is hard to get your music out there, if you make music in English, or if it differs from the mainstream.

What is your point of view on our current world?

We are pretty stunned by the election of Trump (a person that for example doesn't believe in climate change! OMG!), and also are worried about Brexit. We hope the world would unite, not be torn apart. And no matter if it's politics, social media or everyday life: let's stop hating! That is also ripping people apart, and doesn't do anyone any good.
Luckily, family, friends and funny things are here to make us laugh!

Leena, Lasse, thank you so much for your answers and frankness! With their song Blackbird, the duet is one of the 10 acts in this Saturday's Finnish national selection for Eurovision 2017.
