We won’t be waiting until this weekend to discover the next song for the 2017 Eurovision Song Contest. Indeed, Germany will choose its entrant on Thursday, and we will meet a few of the contestants.

Today, we start with Levina!

Hello Levina! Can you first introduce yourself?

Levina is a German singer and songwriter based in Berlin and London. She sings, plays keys and composes soulful pop songs. Levina received intensive classical vocal and piano tuition, which she started when she was 9 at the ’Städtische Musikschule’ in Chemnitz. After winning the singing competition ‘Jugend Musiziert’ she received a scholarship for her singing lessons. Levina played leading parts in two successful German musicals, such as ‘Drei Wünsche Frei’, which premiered at the renowned ‘Semper Oper’ in Dresden. In London, Levina founded her former band ‘Miss Terry Blue’ while she was studying at Tech Music School receiving vocal training in styles of pop, rock, and jazz. Levina won the ‘Best Vocal Performer’ Award from Tech Music School in 2010. Later, as a student of King’s College London, she also achieved the first price at the Battle of the Band competition ‘UNI Music League’ with Miss Terry Blue, which enabled her to work with producers such as Matt Lawrence (Amy Winehouse, Mumford and Sons) and Tom Fuller (Robbie Williams, Gabriella Cilmi). Since 2014, Levina focuses on her solo project and in 2015 she released her single How To Dance

And why trying to be part of the Eurovision Song Contest, Levina?

I have always liked to watch the Eurovision Song Contest and the German selection process. I loved ABBA of course as well as Stefan Raab and Lena!
Last year, one of my best friends sent me the link where you could apply. It was a very simple process, as you just had to upload a video of yourself performing. So I thought “Great! I will apply :)” It would be an absolute honour to represent Germany. Taking part in such a big international music event as well as meeting musicians and singers from all over Europe and the world would be a unique and fun experience, that you will always remember. I would enjoy to contribute to the ESC for Germany with my voice :)

We are going to be performing three songs on the night of the 9th of February. The first song will be a cover song. The second song will be one possible Eurovision song, and the third song will be the second possible Eurovision song. The audience will vote which contestant they prefer and which of the two songs they want them to sing :)
I think it is a good selection process, as the audience has a big influence on the person and the song that will represent Germany in Kiev. The ESC songs are written by some renowned songwriters ;)
Unfortunately I am not too sure why Germany has not done so well lately, but I think this time it's definitely going to be different :) It gives all of us a chance to do better!

What are your musical influences?

My favourite musical styles are probably pop and soul. But at times, I also love to listen to jazz or electronic music. I guess it depends, in which mood I am ;)
My favourite German artists are Joy Denalane, Max Herre, Xavier Naidoo, Max Mutzke..
As for foreigners… I’d say NAO, Coldplay, Amy Winehouse, Adele, Bruno Mars, Disclosure...

As for the music industry… Well, I am working on getting to know it better. Maybe I can answer this question a bit later on ;)

Do you have any links with France? Anything left to say?

Some of my close friends are from France, I've been in France a few times for holidays and loved it. I am still planning to go to "Jazz in Marciac" one year.

Unfortunately there is a new nationalist trend developing in some countries, causing conflicts and problems. I really hope that the importance of understanding, respect and community will find a way into the heads of some political leaders. I think that if people kept a sense of community and responsibility as well as an open mind, then most causes can be tackled together.
Singing makes me smile, of course! ;) And snowboarding with blue skies and sunshine!

Levina, thank you so much for this interview and for your availability! She is one of the five hopefuls that will fight for your votes this Thursday. And the international public is invited to give its opinion through the official Eurovision app!
